OUR TOWN''S FIRE

The day after.

One of the stores that got gutted was Mark's Pizza that was founded in our town in 1982.  They are now a chain.  Mark called two of his closest stores and had them bake and deliver 100 pizzas to the fire so the firemen and firewoman would have something to eat.

These shots are not in order - just to show the different shots I took.  Three fireman and one lady were taken to the hospital.  The firemen were treated and released for smoke.  The lady went into labor.  I have a post coming on for where David, Jean's husband volunteer.  They were here along with 12 other fire companies. from three counties: Wayne, Ontario and Monroe. Our town water pressure got so low, they had to pump water out of the Erie Canal.

God Bless all the firemen and fireladies who risked their lives that day to get people out and to put the fire out.  We might have lost this part of Main Street, but they saved lives and the rest of our town still stands thanks to them.

Nine families lost everything in the fire.  If anyone would like to make a donation to help them, you can make a check to:
James R. Hickey Post 120
American Legion
132 Cuyler Street
Palmyra, New York 14522
315-597-2412
Put Palmyra Fire on the check.
Any donation no matter how large or small would be appreciated.  I am not out for money, but I know we have many generous people who might like to help.  I get nothing from this, just trying to help others.

Just thought I would show some of the shots that I took at the fire. This is just a few of the shots that I took. These pictures of our fire, but could be of any fire, where the firemen and firewoman risk their lives for us.

This broke my heart, I live in Webster and we love coming to Palmyra for the Canal Town Days, this is such a wonderful town.

Thank you Vanssmomc,
Thank you so much. It broke my heart, too. They were talking about tearing these down, but one of our local contractors was in them and said well, let's see what we can do. So whether they will be repaired or torn is still up in the air, but I guess it's too early to decide. One way or the other, we will rise again. Please come for Canal Town Days, you will enjoy them.

I just added three more pictures on the bottom. I have to stop adding these on or people will never get to see them.

Fires really do destroy more things other than just buildings, and its a nice thing that your doing Marilyn trying to get some donations for your community. Hopefully any business like "Marks Pizza" can re-build in this town and re-join the community. Rich

Thank you, Richard. I really appreciate it. We are hoping that Mark's will build a new store here. Not only do we want the store back, but he makes the pizzas.

That looks like it could be my hometown in the midwest. Our buildings look much like yours. They must have been built about the same era. I hope they are able to save them or if they have to rebuild, at least keep the same esthetic.

It is so sad people have lost everything, but so wonderful that no lives were lost. It is also a wonderful thing you are doing to get the word out for how people can help!

Kudo's to Mark of Mark's Pizza as well!

Good Morning Willow's Quiet Corner,
Our buildings were built in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. I had a store in another building on Main Street, they were going to tear down after the fire, but our local contractor went in, sent his crews One of things he saw that went in were fire walls, which weren't in the apartments that burned. We are a small town of about four thousand and every one knows everyone.

I am glad no one was hurt. That's most important. I am also starting a collection in the apartment complex that I live in. I hope people here will help, too.

Hi Laurie,
Thank you for the compliments. It is terrible to lose everything you have and buildings like that. So far they haven't decided whether to tear them down or fix them up. I hope they keep them.

How awful, Marilyn. I'm so sorry. I hope they will decide to rebuild too. And good for Mark to order all of the pizzas to feed the firefighters.

Thank you so much Sheila. I hope they rebuild to. Mark is a good guy. He also makes the best pizza.

I just went through the pictures again. In picture four you see a shopping cart. To the right are the pizzas. They needed the shopping kart to unload the pizzas for the firemen. I didn't notice that when I took the pictures, but taking a good look this morning I notice it. That is my favorite picture of the fire the smoke and firemen. I don't wish that on anyone, but I like that picture.

I put the same comment on twice, I don't know how I did that, so I deleted one of them.

I agree with you Fionalina. We should always be thankfull for our Fire Services-they do a lot for us. It was a bad fire. People are taking donations to help the families. Right now, they are in our local motel except one and she is in with her Grandmother. Things will get better, it takes time.
