MARTHA NEEDS YOUR HELP !!!!

Jean and most of her family have come down with the flu so she asked me if I would do the post for her this week.  Hope they are all feeling better and back soon.

My help is that I am looking for crock pot or slow cooker recipes. Oh, I have a couple of cookbooks, but an looking for recipes you make in your home.  You see crock pots were recently allowed in our homes and for us to use.

Many of the people in our meetings (church) wanted to be allowed to use them especially the ladies.  Others were against the idea as they said it would give us a great deal of free time.  This had been brought up many times, but ruled down by our previous Bishop.  It was brought up again before my husband, Bishop Joseph.

Joseph had seen them in stores, but never saw one working.  He was thinking of buying one to see what it was like, but when we mentioned it to Marilyn, she brought one of hers over that we could use.  I was shocked when she said she has three of them and uses all of them - some at the same time.  The picture above is of the crock pot Marilyn brought to our home.

Edward, and Marilyn showed us to prepare the food and turn it on.  While my food was cooking, I did some ironing and caught up on my sewing.  I didn't see it as a machine that would give someone a lot of free time.  Like all other household machines, it depends what you are doing while they are running.  You can be doing other work or wasting your time.

After we enjoyed our meal from the crock pot, Joseph had all the deacons come to our home for dinner the next evening.  I made the meal in the crock pot.  Edward's Grandmother had one while she was raising him, so he explained how the crock pot worked.  He explained it cooked slower, but uses a lot less electric than the ovens would for those that had electric stoves.  Also, more of the juices and nutrition are detained in crock pot cooking than in oven cooking. Edward also explained how it could be used for making apple sauce, soups, some baked goods and lots more.

At one of the meetings, Bishop Joseph had  a vote from all members including the deacons saying if they would like it or not.  More wanted it than didn't.  Still Joseph said he would make a decision the next week.  The final decision was his. After a week of prayer and thought, he announced at the next meeting that crock pots would be allowed.

We have purchased one and we have used it.  Some of my recipes I still use the oven for, but I have used the crock pot.  It did a great job on the apple sauce and soups that I made with it.  I have also used it for meats and our meals.  To me, the meals taste better.

It also does give us some free time, but I try to use it wisely - doing things I don't have time for.  I also think it will be great to use during our planting and harvesting seasons.

So if you have any recipes that you make in your crock pots, Jean and I would like to have them.  We got a cookbook when we bought our crock pot and bought another cookbook at the book store.  But, we would like your favorites.  I thank you in advance.

God is with us,
Martha

Good Morning Everyone,
As you can see Martha and Jean are looking for your favorite crock pot or slow cooker recipes. I have some of my recipes on Wednesday.

It is in the 30's this morning but suppose to be turning to a lot colder for the next two weeks.

Marilyn,

I rarely use my crockpot (there's just one of me and my hours/commute time exceed most recipes cook time - I should get a timer! :), but one of the websites I visit has quite a few recipes that might work for Martha.

The other types of recipes I have tried from there have all been very good. Perhaps some of these might help or give Martha more ideas of how she could use her new appliance!

Hi Doreen,
I have a timer on my crock spots but they are new. My old ones went after about 30 years of service. When the new one gets done it goes to warm.

Thank you for the e-mail, I will go and take a look and get some recipes for them. Maybe Martha can go to her parents house and use their computer.

Be careful with all our snow,
Marilyn

I don't really have a recipe, but I would like to share something I like to use my crock pot for: Chicken broth! I can make 3 or 4 quarts of fine, clear broth in mine without worrying about it boiling away or needing to be skimmed. I imagine it would work well for other meat broths, as well.

I hope the ladies get lots of good recipes!

Like Dimple, I don't have a recipe. I use my crock pot for two things. One is to make beans (refried beans, actually). The other is to cook a chicken. Then I take off the meat, but the rest of it back in the crock with a few herbs and spices to simmer overnight for broths.

Thank you, Dimple and Lily,

I will see that Martha and Jean get your advice. I also have cooked turkey breasts in my crock pot especially at Christmas when I needed the oven for other dishes. Also cooked ham in there.

Martha cooked a pot roast in hers the first time she used it. She had the roast, carrots, celery and potatoes in the crock pot with the pot roast. It came out delicious.

Just for clarification, it was "Willow's Quiet Corner" that posted the Slow Cooker web site up above, not me. Isn't that a nice name?

I'm always looking for slow cooker recipes too. I'm going to check out that web site. I don't use mine too often, but one thing I like to make is barbecued pulled pork. I take a shoulder butt pork roast, trim as much fat off as I can, cut it in half if it's large, then pour a bottle of barbecue sauce over it and let it cook for 6-8 hours. The meat just falls apart when it's done.

It's so interesting that an appliance we take for granted had to be approved by Bishop Joseph and the community. I'm glad they said it was okay to use. I don't think it really saves any time, it's just another way to cook a meal. (and makes the house smell great all afternoon)

Hi Doreen,
Thank you for correcting my mistake. I apologize to Willow's Quiet Corner for my mistake.

Oh, I love your pork recipe. That sounds delicious. I will have to try it.

It is interesting that things we take for granted they have to approve. Martha said they had to go through this for electric mixers, carpet cleans, and more.

I sent Martha a recipe from my work email. It was so good! I have a large over crockpot and I love it! Especially since I can lift out the crock and wash it easily. It also came with a meat thermometer that plugs into the pot and tells you what temp the meat is inside so there is no chance of over/undercooking.

Rice pudding is good made in the crockpot I love it made with raisins and lots of cinnamon and nutmeg you may need to use extra milk as it does absorb quickly

Using the crock pot or slow cooker is not a time saver when you consider how long it takes but it does free you up to get on with other things plus cooking overnight or while you are at work or out for the day is so practical

Hi Christine T,
I have your recipe and I will see that Martha and Jean get it. I have the lift out crock, but I don't have a meat thermometer with mine. I didn't know they had them. Thank you for tell us.

Hi Mimi,
Do you have a recipe for making rice pudding in the crock pot??

I agree with you for the use of it. As Martha said, I think this will come in especially handy at planting and harvest time. They can put something on in the morning for dinner in the evening.

I love using my crockpot for making applesauce!

Also, here's an easy taco chili recipe:
1 lb browned ground beef
1 diced onion
2 cans stewed tomatoes (can use plain or chili-ready, depending on how spicy you like your chili)
2 cans kidney beans, drained (I like to use 1 can light red, 1 can dark red)
2 cans hominy, drained
2 cans chopped green chiles
1 packet of taco seasoning
1 packet of powdered ranch dressing
