JEAN'S DONUT RECIPE

JEAN'S DONUT RECIPE

Vegetable Oil
3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour*
1 cup sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons shortening
2 eggs
3/4 cup milk

NOTE: If you are using self-rising flour, omit baking powder and salt

Heat 2 to 3 inches of oil in deep-fry pan or heavy kettle until 375 degrees.  Beat 1 1/2 cups of flour and the remaining ingredients in large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds.  Continue beating on medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 2 minutes.  Stir in rest of flour.  Turn dough onto well-floured, cloth-covered board; roll around lightly to coat with flour.  Roll gently, 3/8 inch thick.  Cut with floured doughnut cutter.  Slide doughnuts into the hot oil with a wide spatula.  Turn the doughnuts as they rise to surface.  Fry doughnuts until golden brown, 1 to 1 1/2 minutes on each side.  Remove from oil; DO NOT prick doughnuts.  Drain on paper towels.  Serve plain, sugared or frosted. 

Jean: I have several donut recipes and thought that this one would be the easiest to make.  This is the one I use the most.  It came from a Betty Crocker's Cookbook many years ago.

    It is 16 degrees this morning, but it's not so bad because the wind isn't blowing.

  4. I was at an Amish Auction in the Southern tier of NY State a few years ago and bought the biggest donuts that I've ever seen. Do you think this is a typical recipe that they would use? I know that the Amish and Mennonites are famous for their donuts at events like this and wondered if the recipe is a usual one or a secret one.

    I got a hold of Jean. She said to make them so large, they have a large mold that cuts many donuts at one time. They cook them. She wanted to know if they had a special taste to them? She has lots of donut recipes. Sometimes they leave the donuts plain or tip them into chocolate, sugar, cinnamon, etc.

  7. I think some Amish recipes use yeast. We usually have donut stands at big flea markets in our area that are run by Amish and Mennonites. They are delicious, especially when you can eat them while they're hot!

    In my area, we have many Amish, and have flea markets, but no Amish selling donuts at these flea markets. Wish we did. Nothing is like a donut when it's hot - you are right.

  9. Hi Folks,
    I got Jean on the phone again. She said she has other donut recipes. The reason she gave this one it is the easiest of these she uses and the one she uses the most. She does have recipes with yeast in them if anyone would like them. She also uses them, too.

  10. Easy is good. I don't think I would make the recipe with yeast. I was just curious which recipe was used for the giant donuts. They were fantastic!!

  14. I just made these. They are yummy! I made donuts, donut holes & donut sticks. I glazed some and rolled the rest in sugar, powdered sugar, & cinnamon sugar.
