NEWARK ROADSIDE DINER, NEWARK, NY

I went into the diner and asked Jim Mc Bride the owner and chef if I could take pictures of the diner.  He said: "You might as well, everyone else does."  So I did.

Newark Diner goes back a long way in my life.  It is one of the few restaurants that my parents, brother and I went to, when I was a child, that is still in business today.  It hasn't changed much either.  The only two changes that were done is the alcove was built around the front door outside  and they removed the main jukebox and the coin-operated jukebox wall models that use to be at each table.  Those days you could pay a nickel for one song, two for a dime or six for a quarter.  You didn't have to go to the main jukebox to put the money in-you could do it at your table.  You could also select the tunes from there.

The top picture is of the diner outside.  The second picture is of the front, inside of the diner.  Third picture is of Jim Mc Bride preparing food for a customer.  Next picture shows the autographed pictures of the stars that were in this restaurant when it was used in the TV soap opera General Hospital back in 1993.  Next is the back inside of the restaurant with the booths and stools.  Next is their check cashing policy (which I thought was great) and their For Sale sign.  Yes, it is for sale. The McBride's outside diner sign is next.  Donuts on the counter are next and last but not least in their breakfast menu.

This restaurant has been there since 1939 (before my time) and was called the Sterling Streamline model restaurant, where it was made,  by J. B. Judkins Company in Merrimac, Massachusetts-it is number 397 of those made. The interior and exterior are of the original porcelain with mahogany wood trimming-that you can see in the pictures. It was made for and put there for the original owner who was Paul Scofield and it was Scofield's Diner, which us old folks still call it today, myself included.  Next to the diner Scofield's also owned a gas station (which is now Dunkin Donuts) and next to that was the Buick Car Dealership (now a furniture store) that the Scofield's also owned.  It is one of the few remaining diner restaurants left in our area although there is one in the Strong Museum in Rochester, New York.

Jim Mc Bride is the third owner of the Newark Diner and has owned it for almost 30 years.  His wife and daughter, who worked with him in the restaurant, are unable to do so now for medical reasons,  so he would like to sell it, retire and enjoy life.  This restaurant is almost always busy, I went there several times before I could get these pictures.  Usually the place is packed and customers did not want their pictures taken.  Finally, I got there between lunch and diner crowds.

Served in the restaurant are sandwiches, dinners, etc.  They do not sell any liquor.  Most of the people that come in are locals.  If you want to know anything about local town, directions, or people someone will be there that knows the answer.  I still enjoy going in there after all these years-I always run into one of relatives or someone I know.

I hope someone buys it that keeps is going.  Really enjoy going there all these years and don't want to stop now.  If someone is interested in buying this, you have to use the land line to contact Mr. Mc Bride-there is no computer there.

Thought you might enjoy the Newark Diner. They still make the best fish fry around on Friday's.   I know this isn't Amish or Mennonite, but I said I would have some other things in my area on and this is one of them.  Hope you enjoy the pictures and post of the diner.

Marilyn

I was by there today February 5th and the restaurant is closed right now as Jim is in the hospital.

So enjoyable to see the pictures of the diner. My husband and I were long haul drivers and we prefered the east coast run. We always stopped at diners to eat.
There were quite a few on the east coast.
This brought back many memories.

Hi Marilyn
I really enjoyed your post on the diner - it brought back memories of the juke box selections at the tables of a local Pizza Place which I hadn'thought of in years! I also googled Newark, NY which looks to be a quaint friendly village in the Lakes region.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Maureen,
So happy you enjoyed it. Would you believe that Newark, NY is a city? It is. I don't know how that quaint little village got themselves declared a city, but they did. It is a very friendly village in our region.
Thanks for coming,
Marilyn

I'm a really big fan of these classic American diner's and in fact I try to eat in one when I can, Lancaster and Lebanon counties for example have a good amount of them spread around.

And I've found for me anyway that these diners usually make the best breakfast compared to the chain restaurants, plus when your inside you have all that eye candy to look at with all of the history and charm that comes with a classic diner. Richard

Hi Richard,
Glad you like the diners like I do. If you ever get up this way, this is one you will have to go too. It fits right in to what you like. Most of the meals that I have had in there are breakfast. This is like a step back in time.

I sure will Marilyn, and this diner looks to be pretty clean. Like I had told you in an email maybe if you have the time doing a food review along with some images of that food would be pretty fun to do, I did a few of them myself and posted that a few years ago.

And yes I hope everything works out regarding the owners health, and I hope the new owner takes care of it like this owner had done. Richard

Thank's Richard. I never thought of taking a picture of the food while I was there. I will do that next time I go in there. I hope Jim gets better so it will open soon. Also hope he finds a new owner that keeps it going.

Good Morning,
Well, the snow is still coming down from that eastern snow storm. I don't know how deep it is out, but we passed a foot of snow. Just walked Pierre and the maintenance men are out clearing the sidewalks and driveway. When they get done, they have to start all over again. Welcome to New York State in the winter.

On TV they said we broke the 1895 record of snow. The record was 8 inches and when they checked last we were over 9 inches-pushing 10.

Made me quite hungry reading the menu-not surprised it has been a popular place to eat

Hi Fionalina,

Thank you, I hope he gets well soon-not just because I want to eat there.

Happy you liked the menu. It's good food, too.

Oh !!! Darn !!! We are losing it. I can't hardly believe the article. I will surely miss it. Have to drive to Buffalo to eat there. Thank you so much for telling me. None of the local papers have it in there - yet. Newark's loss is Buffalo's gain. I am still in shock.

Got our local paper today and the Newark Diner served it's last meal on April 7th, so I won't be able to have one last one there. I will have to wait until it opens in Buffalo. It's kind of sad. There is only one restaurant left that my family use to eat in and that is the Holloway House in East Bloomfield, NY. That is one we only went to on special occassions. I will miss the Newark Diner, but I am glad it is getting a new home instead of being auctioned off or torn down.

Marilyn,
I hope you don't mind, but I've used two of your photos in a post for Buffalo.com. I will give you full credit and link back to your original blog post. Please let me know if this is a problem, and I will remove the photos. You seem to have captured the best photos of this diner that I can find online, and I hope that it's OK that I've shared a few with our readers.

Hi SJ,
Yes, that would be fine with me. I do have more that aren't on this post. Just let me know where I could see the pictures as I would like to read the article.

Hi SJ,
I was wondering you wouldn't have anyway of finding when they are hauling it out of there do you? I would like to go down and take pictures. I am just a private person, wouldn't get into their restricted area or anything like that, but I would really like pictures of that being hauled out. Any information would be appreciated.

I'm not entirely sure when the diner will be removed from its current location and sent to Ohio for refurbishing. If I hear anything about specifics, I'll let you know.

Thank you for allowing me to use your photos!

Hello SJ,
I feel honored that your chose my pictures. You are first person that ever asked me before.

I appreciate your letting me know if you hear anything about them moving it from Newark.

I tried several times to get the post that my pictures are in, but for some reason, I can't get it. I get everything else, but that post.

Sincerely,
Marilyn
