EDWARD'S SHORT'NIN BREAD

This recipe was brought into this country by the slaves that were on plantations.  They also brought in the song short'nin bread.

EDWARD'S SHORT'NIN BREAD RECIPE

4 cups sifted flour
1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 lb softened butter or margarine

Mix flour and brown sugar together thoroughly.  Add butter and work in until a smooth dough is formed.  Turn onto a lightly floured surface and pat to a 1/2 inch thickness.  (Chill if necessary for easier handling)  Cut dough into desired shapes and transfer to cookie sheet.  Bake at 325 degrees for about 25 minutes or until very delicately browned.  Remove sheets.  Cool for about 5 minutes before transfereing to rack to cook thoroughly.

I apologize to Edward for not putting this on the Christmas recipes.  Somehow I over looked it. He was very kind and understood.  This recipe can be made and enjoyed anytime of year not just Christmas.

Good Morning Everyone,
Again I apologize to Edward for not having this on during Christmas.

It is 7 degrees above zero this morning. We have a little snow coming down.

What a wonderful story and recipe! Thank you Edward.
It should get up to 10º today around here. That would be great actually.

Good Morning Vickie,
I will give Edward your message.
WOW, it is getting warm at your place. LOL You take of Mabel and Henry in this cold. It is so darn cold Pierre doesn't even want to go outside to do his business and you are colder than we are.

I love recipes that only use a few ingredients. It's so interesting that baking can be done with a few simple items.

Thank you for posting this Edward.

It finally stopped snowing this afternoon. Tomorrow will be a much better day.

A little history...short bread has celtic origins..worked its way down to England..since England was big in slave trade, this would be a product taught to the kitchen cooks. It is not a german recipe.strictly celtic.

Shortnin' Bread is a traditional Negro plantation song.

Lyrics
Put on the skillet,
Slip on the lid,
Mama's gonna make
A little short'nin' bread.
That ain't all
She's gonna do,
Mama's gonna make
A little coffee, too.

Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread,
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread.

Three little children,
Lyin' in bed
Two were sick
And the other 'most dead
Sent for the doctor
And the doctor said,
"Give those children some
Short'nin' bread."

Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread,
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread.

Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread,
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread.

When those children,
Sick in bed,
Heard that talk
About short'nin' bread,
Popped up well
To dance and sing,
Skipped around and cut
The pigeon wing.

Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread,
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread.

Slip to the kitchen,
Slip up the led,
Filled my pockets full of
Short'nin' bread;
Stole the skillet,
Stole the led,
Stole the gal makin'
Short'nin' bread.

Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread,
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread.

Caught me with the skillet,
Caught me with the led,
Caught me with the gal makin'
Short'nin' bread;
Paid six dollars for the skillet,
Six dollars for the led,
Spent six months in jail eatin'
Short'nin' bread.

Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread,
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin', short'nin',
Mama's little baby loves
Short'nin' bread.

The slaves made the song up, over here.

I told my husband about Edward's recipe yesterday, and now neither of us can stop thinking of the Short'nin Bread song. I have to try to replace it with another tune today.

Hi Doreen,
That song is catching. I remember when my Mom use to sing that song to me when I was a child.
