Pork and Sauerkraut are a German Amish tradition that date back to Germany. Tradition has that the pork is a sign of well - being, nourishment, progression and good luck. The sauerkraut is believed to be seen as a sign of longevity, wealth and happiness. It is said: "may you have as much wealth and happiness as there are shreds of sauerkraut in the pot."
This meal can be eaten anytime of year, but is tradition to eat on New Year's Day. There are many different Amish recipes of this Pork and Sauerkraut, but this is the way that Anna prepares it in our home. Anna serves this with mashed potatoes and applesauce.

Happy New Year, Everyone,

I grew up eating pork and sauerkraut almost every Sunday. My mom made a large afternoon meal and my aunt who lived down the street and had no children, came to have dinner with my family every week. What great memories you've reminded me of. I don't think she put the brown sugar on the pork. That sounds great and I'll try it Anna's way.
It is so nice to have a post from Anna. I hope we hear more from her.
Happy New Year to all!!!

Happy New Year Doreen,
Your pork and sauerkraut memories are wonderful.
We had a hard time getting Anna to give one of her recipes. She didn't want anything to do with computers. When Elmer, explained to her that she wouldn't be any where near the computer, but just give me the recipe over the phone- she agreed. I am so glad she did.
Happy New Year,
Marilyn
It is 6:47 EST and the snow has arrived. The snow is falling now and is suppose to snow for the next 36 hours. So we will see what happens.

this sounds very good, wondering if Anna makes her own sauerkraut to go with it? very kind of her to share!
Hi Annie,
Glad you like the recipe. Yes, Anna makes her own sauerkraut. I will see she gets your message.

The snow has come and is coming down. Am watching TV to see if the Nutrition Center is closed, but I don't think so. Sure is cold. It's 11 today.

We are under snow now. The Nutrition Center was closed today, but I had to go down and call everyone to tell them. I have the feeling we will be closed tomorrow, too. Pierre doesn't go out to potty unless he really has to. He is not a snow dog. Poor thing. Oh well, that is Upstate New York.
I have what I think is really nice post going on tomorrow. Hope you like it.
Marilyn
