JEAN'S SPICED SOUR CREAM MAPLE PIE

JEAN'S SPICED SOUR CREAM MAPLE PIE

1 1/4 cups soft maple sugar
1 1/4 cups sour cream (may use yogurt)
1 Tbsp. flour
1 egg beaten
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cinammon
1 tsp allspice
1 unbaked pie shell

Mix ingredients together and place in an unbaked pie shell.  Bake at 425 degrees for 10  minutes and at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes longer or until pie is firm when tested with blade of knife or toothpick comes out clean.

This recipe goes back a long, long way.

JEAN WILL HAVE A POST ON TOMORROW.

This sounds delicious and very easy to make. I'm not sure what maple sugar is though. Is it something that is sold along with maple syrup?

Good Morning Doreen,

It is like regular sugar, but it is maple. It is made from maple syrup. If that makes sense.

Hi Folks,
I called Jean to check if I was right on the sugar. Jean said maple sugar is made from maple syrup. You should be able to buy it in a grocery store especially in the upstate New York area. You can also use maple candy instead of maple syrup. This is an old recipe that goes back in her family at least to her great-grandmother - if not further.

We have a store in the area that sells local maple syrup, so I'll check with them first to see if they have maple sugar. I'd love to make this pie.

Would this be similar to brown sugar?

Hi Doreen and Wilma,

According to Jean Maple sugar is similar to brown sugar. It has a more maple taste to it - which makes sense. It is light brown color about the color of brown sugar.
