On May 3rd last year, we had a big fire on Main Street in Palmyra that took down several stores with apartments above them. It is also the date we mark Jean's anniversary. Jean asked instead of honoring her that I put on the Palmyra Fire Department. So today is the first part. Tomorrow will be the other half of the Palmyra Fire Department.
The first picture shows where the Fire Department use to be. The building was originally built as an opera house, then became the Palmyra Fire House for many years. When they moved the Fire Department to the new building, it became Village Hall. The next three pictures are of the Fire House.
On April 26th, they had Open House trying to get new men and women to join our volunteer fire department. I was given free run with my camera. I have shown the fire trucks (not all were there as some were on a fire call). Some of the firemen and firewomen. Also showed the inside of the fire hall, some of the equipment they wear and how they pull lit on. The last is a picture that someone painted for the Fire Department. It is a picture of a fireman with his arms around people.
This is the first set of pictures, I will have more on tomorrow, May 3rd.

I'm sure the firemen and women are happy to have a new modern firehall, but the opera house is gorgeous. I hope they had a good turnout at their open house and recruited some volunteers. The volunteer fire department is always in need of more help, and I'm so thankful for all the work they do and the time they devote to keep us safe.
So typical of Jean to pay respects to others instead of herself. Happy Anniversary Jean, and I'm looking forward to your next post.

Good Morning Doreen,
Yes, they are always looking for more firemen or women. They had a pretty good turn out when I was there. I just hope some of them joined up. We need more people so bad. They do devote their lives for others.
Yes, it is just like Jean to want something on instead of herself. I wanted today's post on her and she wouldn't let me do it. So I put on what she wanted. I will see she gets your message.

Our fire department here In Nixa MO is wonderful. They will install batteries in smoke detectors, etc.
My husband has problems and falls quite often. I can't pick him up, so I call them and they come out.
Great guys

What a beautiful old building! I wonder if they had one of those firemen poles installed inside to slide down from upstairs? I hope they are able to get the volunteers needed. And everyone is right about Jean being as selfless as she is! Not too many people like her.
Laura
Hi Jodi,
Our Fire Department also gives out batteries for smoke detectors.
It is so nice they come to your house and help you and your husband.

Hi Laura,
No they didn't have the pole in the old building. The Fire Department and Police Department were on the first floor. The upstairs is where the opera house is, what's left of it. I hope they got more folks to join, too.
Yes, Jean is so selfless. She insisted that I put on the Fire Department instead of her.

That was a beautiful picture at the end. I always got a kick out of how the fire people set up their "clothes" so they could just jump in them. I wanted to grow up to be a fire lady when I was in kindergarten.
Hi Melissa,
I liked that picture, too. You still might be able to be one if you would like to today.
