ELMER TELLS WHAT HE AND ANNA DID ON SUNDAY

Today was an off Sunday, which means we do not have church on this Sunday.  So I thought I would give you an idea of what we do on off Sunday.

We consider Sunday, the Lord's Day.  Our day of rest.  But, that still means we have chores to do on Sunday.  I still have to milk the cows, collect the eggs and feed the animals.  So when Anna and I get up in the morning, we do our chores.  When we come back into the house, we have breakfast.

Now this leads to a rumor I heard.  We are not allowed to cook on Sunday.  That is not true.  If we did that we would starve or be pretty hungry.  Anna does all her baking by Saturday - like pies, cakes, bread, rolls, etc.  Sometimes breakfast is casserole that Anna made on Saturday that she could put in the oven on Sunday morning.  If I want bacon and eggs or pancakes or waffles, etc. - she makes then on Sunday.

The same goes with dinner.  Whatever can be made on Saturday is - like salads, and more.  But, we cook meat, potatoes and more on Sunday.  We are not to spend our whole day cooking on Sunday, but most times you have to cook unless you are invited to someone's home.

After breakfast, Anna and I prayed.  We read the Bible.  Discus concerns that we think need prayer, people that need prayer and for things people ask to prayer for.  We also, thank the Lord for all He has given us and done for us.  Anna and I also sing. We do this for at least two hours, unless someone comes over.

Dinner time we had Hannah, Moses, their children, Anna's parents, John, Sarah, along with our daughter Alma and her family over to our house for dinner.  If I counted right that came out to 23 of us.  We had pot roast, mashed potatoes, vegetables, tossed salad, rolls, butter and more for dinner.  After dinner we had apple pie and ice cream for desert.  The children played outside after dinner, the ladies took care of the kitchen and us men sat and talked.  Anna's Mother was having a confusing day, but there were a lot of us there to help her.  They all stayed until shortly before milking time and left.

After milking Anna and I decided to take a walk.  We just took a walk down the road just to talk and be together.  A couple of different times Amish passed us in buggies asking if we wanted a ride, but we explained we were just out for a walk.

We got home and relaxed.  Sat on our back porch where Anna and I read the paper.  We talked and just did nothing.  It did lead me to think about how lucky we are.  We have a house, where some are living on the streets.  We have a farm, where some people can not find work.  We have food for our table where some people in the world are going hungry.  I have a wonderful wife who loves and understands me - where some people are searching for their spouse.  The Lord has graced us with a large family.  I could go on and on.  After discussing this, Anna and I again prayed, thanking the Lord for being so generous to us.

Right now, Anna is in the kitchen making us roast beef sandwiches for supper.  We will have that with some of the salad that was left over from dinner.  She said she might be able to scrape me up another piece of apple pie - which means she has another pie in that kitchen somewhere - or at least part of one.

We decided we re going to spend the evening home.  But that does not mean that someone won't stop in and see us.  We never know.  Before we go to bed, we will have Bible reading, praying and singing.

So that is what we are doing today.

Trust God's Wisdom,
Elmer

Somehow I made a mistake and this post came on early today.  I guess I dated it or timed this wrong.  This is on for Monday.    Marilyn

Thanks, Elmer! I didn't realize you had off Sundays. How often do they happen and how are they chosen? Are they on a regular schedule or just randomly chosen? Hope you got that piece of apple pie! :)

Good Morning Everyone,
I over slept this morning. Couldn't get to sleep until about 3:00 AM, but when I feel to sleep, I went out. Pierre woke me up this morning. Still can't decide whether to get the car fixed or get a new to me car.

Will see that Elmer gets all your messages.

Elmer describes a wonderful Sunday, the way we should all take the time to be thankful for our blessings and family. About the rumor of not cooking on Sunday, I wonder if someone got the Old Order Amish confused with Orthodox Jews? It never crossed my mind that the Amish wouldn't cook on Sundays, in fact most observing Christians make a lot of things ahead and cooks the rest on Sunday. Saves valuable time that is better spent with family. Please tell Elmer and the rest that is why your columns are so educational. And... very enjoyable!
Also Marilyn, I hope you get the car situation straightened out. I'm praying hard that the right, affordable, new-to-you car will come along. Thank you for what you do.

Hi Carol in SC,
Elmer said that he has had people ask him if it was true that the Amish don't cook on Sunday. An Amish rumor people have hard. So that is why he answered that.

I may be getting my car fixed, if I can borrow the money from the bank or some place. Cars I looked at for the price I could afford are in worse condition than my car. Also, it would be better on a deal if I had the car to trade in. I thank you for your prayers, I can really use them.

Hi GemHultgren,

That would be great if the rest of the world allowed peace. Thank you for the compliments. I will see that Elmer gets your message.

Don't worry about the duplicates, it happens to me sometimes, too.

Anna & Elmer, Amish, parents of Jean.
Jean & David, Old Order Mennonite.
Olive & Albert, Amish, parents of Elmer and grandparents of Anna
