ELMER TELLS ABOUT THEIR NEW BUGGY AND MORE

First, I would like to say Happy Thanksgiving, today to our friend's in Canada as today is their Thanksgiving Day.  Please take this day to thank the Lord for all He has done.  Really, not only today bit every day.

Someone asked why we don't have rubber tires on our farm equipment?  There are a number of reasons.  The main one is that we are taught not to live in the "ways of the world".  So, today, we retain many of the ways of our forefathers.  Notice I said many, but not all.

Here we are back again about we had to hand milk cows when I was a child and now we have automatic milkers.  We had out houses, but now, in our group, we have indoor plumbing.  It is hard to explain sometimes, reasons why we change some things and don't others.

With the metal wheels and horses pulling the plow, we can only travel so far.  Also with horse and buggies, we can only go so far.  We can only go so fast.  It is to remind us to stay close to our families, homes and churches.

Now again, we are back to the trip that Fannie, Amos, Olive and Albert took out west, but that is a rare trip.  Right now they have their reservations with Amtrak to go to Florida, the end of this month. We also have drivers to take us to the doctors, to get groceries, to visit others out of area, etc.  So we have changed some in our ways.

In our area, if we take the plows out on the road with the metal tires, we must put rubber straps around them so they don't ruin the highway.  This was passed a couple of years ago by the county.

Anna and I just got our new buggy.  It came sooner that we thought it would.  The man said that he always says it will be longer than it usually is - in case he runs into a problem or family commitments, etc.  It is smaller than the one we had.  It fits two comfortably, maybe three, depending on how big they are.in the front.  Two small grandchildren would fit in the back.  The one we had would fit three, in the front and three adults or four adults in the back.  We gave out old buggy to John and Sarah.  They will need it.

Anna says to remember that I can't put all the junk and tools in the back of this one that I did in the last one.  Also, I had better be careful that I just don't throw things back there and damage the interior of the carriage like I did in the old one.  This will probably be our last new carriage and she wants to make sure I take care of it.

I asked what about her???? She said she always takes care of the carriage. She took care of the old one and she will the new one.   It's me that throws things around and isn't the least bit careful.

We do have another buggy that I use to take when I go on jobs.  It is a flat bed and all open.  When it gets colder I sometimes took the buggy as it was closed in and warmer.  She said I would have to work something out as I am not putting all my work supplies in this new buggy and damaging it up.  I guess I got my orders from the boss lady !!!

I think getting a new buggy is like  Englshers getting a new car.  We want to keep it as new as we can as long as we can.  Sometimes we use to let the old buggy sit out all night.  Now, the new one has to be the barn every night.  I wonder what Anna's going to think the first time it gets snowed on when we use it.

Trust God's Wisdom,
Elmer

Thank you, Elmer. How many buggy makers are in your area? Do theAmish and Mennonites buy from the same buggy maker?

Thanks Elmer - this was interesting and I enjoyed Anna's comments and concerns. Ha,ha! I do have a question. Here in Pennsylvania, in the Lancaster county area, we see all black buggies and also gray ones. Is it true that the gray ones belong to Amish families and the black ones to Old Order Mennonite families?
Thanks again, and to Marilyn for putting the post together.

Marilyn - please thank Elmer for remembering Canadian Thanksgiving - that was nice to read. and please tell him that we spent our Thanksgiving with our best friends in the next village and their family - they "adopted" us when we first moved here. we gave many blessings to The Lord for there is so much to be thankful for! and we say Grace and give blessings every day - as Elmer said, it is important to do so!

i can just see Elmer chucking tools and all kinds of stuff in the back of his buggy! and i am sure it drove Anna crazy!!!

i like the questions that the others asked above and would like to know the answers as well.

your friend,
kymber

Hi Kymber,
I will see that Elmer gets your messages. It was kind of him to note today is Thanksgiving in Canada. Will tell him people want answers to the questions, which I think he will do soon. He is looking for more questions.

You Friend,
Marilyn

Thanks for posting, and I have a question. I have a new wood cook stove in my kitchen that I just got two months ago. Could Anna post about her new stove, maybe the kind it is and a little about it? Thank you!

I just love Elmers' sense of humor. Quite enjoyed this post and he is so right about always being thankful. I hope he listens to his "boss lady" and keeps the buggy new looking a long time. Please thank him for sharing with us.
