OSPREY ARE BACK !!!

Our Osprey that we had on last year - are back - in the same nest.  The female came first on April 2nd and the male came on April 7th.  First pictures I took through the windshield of the car as I was afraid if I got out they would fly away.  I went down the road, turned around and took the last three pictures out of the window.  Will be taking other pictures of them during the spring and summer.

Marilyn - the osprey are the provincial bird of nova scotia (my island is part of nova scotia). each year when we are down at the river, we get at least a few days to watch the glory of the parents teaching the child how to dip to catch fish. it is amazing to watch.

Oh Kymber,

I would love to see that. The ones we have here must do that in our canal, but I have never seen the three of them do it here. It must really be something to see.

Marilyn - you WOULD love it. and yes...if there is a canal nearby - that is where they are catching their fish. and where they teach their babies. you should hang around the canal and see if you can't spot any doing so. the way they float /glide in the air, make a slow swoop, and then - blammo! dip right into the water and come up with a fish - it's amazing! but it's super funny watching the babies as they are quite awkward with the swoop and normally end up right up to their tails in the water. and come up empty-handed. whereas the parents just dip their heads in the water and always come up with a fish. we have spent many an hour laying on our blanket and laughing our heads off! it takes the babies about 2 weeks to figure out how to do it right. we love watching them.

Hi Kymber,
The canal is right behind where I live. I can go to the park across the street. Problem is, I see them fly over, but I don't see them diving for fish. Someone told me where they go in the canal, but it is on private property. How can property along the edge of the Erie Canal be private property???? Anyway, I will keep an eye out for them. Don't know if she has had her eggs yet.
