JEAN'S OLD FASHIONED MINCEMEAT RECIPE

JEAN'S OLD-FASHIONED MINCEMEAT

3 quarts chopped apples (cored but not peeled)
4 quarts cooked meat, boned and ground with a coarse chopper blade
1 lbs raisins
1 1/2 cup cider or 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup water
2 1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 1/2 tsp allspice
3-4 cups light molasses or the same amount of brown sugar

Mix all ingredients together and cook until hot.  Put the hot mixture in pint jars and cold pack for 20 minutes.  Makes 8 quarts.  One quart makes two pies.

JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON.

Thank you, Laura, for your comments to Jean. I see she will get them. Mincemeat is my favorite pie, too.

Pierre and I are staying warm except at potty time. It sure is cold out.

You stay warm, too,
Marilyn

I've never had mincemeat. It certainly looks interesting, and I've heard it's very good. I think I'll have to taste it before I'm adventurous enough to make it. A friend of mine makes it, so I'll get a sample from her.

Is this something that's served as an entree, side dish, or dessert? I've always thought of Mincemeat Pie as a dessert, but I'm a bit surprised to see that it actually has meat in it. For some reason I thought it couldn't possibly have meat and be a dessert. (Sorry, I think I've lived a sheltered life and don't know about these things.)

Hi Doreen,
Mincemeat is usually made in a pie that is served for desert. You can also make cookies with mincemeat in them. I love mincemeat pie, but I know some don't. It has a bit of a spicey taste to it. Taste it at your friends. It is a taste that either you like it or you don't. I know my Mom made mincemeat pies for Christmas for Dad and I. She nor my brothers liked it so it was more for my Dad and I. She made pumpkin pie for the rest of them.

Doreen, you can make mini minced meat pies, like like little tarts...and have them with tea..you can put a custard on the bottom, and the minced meat on top...some have ruined their pies by adding too much vinegar, so be careful measuring on that..makes it too sour.Minced meat is always good with ice cream on the side.
