THE VIOLET BARN AFRICAN VIOLETS

When I first went to The Violet Barn, I thought African Violets were African Violets - all were alike.  Ma showed me that I was wrong.  I took picture of some of the signs that tell what kind of African Violets they are - along with the price at the store.  I learned, they are not all alike.

They also ship out LOTS of flowers.  I saw the shipping area but was asked not to take pictures there as it might disturb the people that do the packing.  I stood and watched them pack.  Each plant is carefully packaged and sent.  It is really something to see.

Tomorrow I will show pictures of other flowers they have there and the store.  I hope you enjoy these and more to come.  The Violet Barn www.violetbarn.com

Good Morning Everyone,

Here are some of the beautiful flowers. There will be more on tomorrow.

It is 2 degrees outside this morning. We didn't get the snow they said we would were, which helps.

Good Morning Vickie,

Oh, and I thought it was cold !!! You take care of Mabel and Henry in this cold. I wish this snow would stop coming everywhere.

Hugs to Mabel and Henry,
Marilyn and Pierre

These flowers are beautiful. It must be fun to see hundreds and hundreds of them. It's interesting that they can ship them, especially in winter, and have them arrive in good condition. I wonder if they didn't want you to photograph the packing area so there isn't a record of how they do it. They must have some secrets.

I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures.

Hi Doreen,

So happy you liked the flowers, They are very careful in how they ship them. They treat them like precious class in their packing. It is really something to see. Maybe you are right. I had never seen plants backed so protected and careful before.

More pictures coming tomorrow.

What a nice job with the pictures! Where I live there used to be a huge greenhouse that sold wholesale and retail orchids and african violets along with some other tropical style plants. In the greenhouse, worked a very elderly woman who was just a wealth of horticultural knowledge that she was so generous to share with any and all. She taught me personally so much about violets. Well she has long since passed and the greenhouse is now a housing development but on these cold days I think of her and how I used to go visit and browse the greenhouse to get a wee dose of spring to hold me over until the real thing came along. Such a pleasant memory and I thank you for helping it arise again for me with these pictures! A wonderful gift. Chris

Thank you so much, Chris,

We use to have a place on the back to Newark where there was a lady that raised African Violets in greenhouses. She was similar to your lady, that told us so much of the African Violets and other plants. She too is gone. When I ride the back roads, I can see the shells of her greenhouses. It's sad that places like that are gone now.

I love African Violets! We use to go to different friend's houses, and take cuttings, so we shared ours all around..everyone had something different. So easy to propagate...they never fail to grow and bloom..just water in the saucer..keep the water off the leaves..they make a great display on a kitchen window sill....I have never seen a place devoted to them before..really interesting...You should moon light as a photographer, Marilyn!!

Ho SueAnn,
Long time since I heard from you. I love African Violets too, but I kill the poor things. I took them and showed them to Ma. She said they aren't in big enough containers, need more water and more light. That was in October and still haven't put them in the larger containers.

Funny you mention that, I have taken lots of pictures, but never sent them out to a paper or anything.
