ANNA'S HERB AND FLOWER SACHETS

With Spring finally here with flowers and herbs coming out, I thought you might like to freshen and beautify your house.  You can also make these for gifts.

SACHET BAGS

Combine 1 oz. each of powdered cloves, caraway seed, nutmeg, mace and cinnamon with 6 oz, powdered orris root.  Put up in fancy lace and calico bags and sew shut.  You can hang these in the closet or place them in a drawer.  These fragrant sachets also repel moths.  These make great gifts.

ANOTHER SACHET FOR CLOTHES CLOSET, DRAWERS AND GIFTS

1 thin-skinned orange
2 oz. more or less whole cloves
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground orris root
Dab of ground allspice

Prick the orange with an ice pick.  Stick in cloves as close together as you can without splitting the orange skin between holes.  When the orange has been completely covered, roll in ground cinnamon, orris root, and allspice.  Take a square of nylon net big enough to draw around orange.  Tie with bright ribbon.  Hang in closet for nice clean, spicy smell.

FRIENDSHIP POTPOURRI

2 cups peony petals
1 cup rosebuds
1 cup chamomile flowers
1 cup linden flowers
1 tbsp allspice
4-5 drops patchouli oil

Dry all petals, buds, flowers, etc.  Use a screen propped to give circulation all around.  Drying takes 2 to 10 days.  When dry, blend petals and oil in a ceramic bowl.  When well blended, store in an airtight container.

The last one, you might want to make up for antime, but especially next winter.

ROSE JAR

When your roses are blooming, gather petals before the sun is high.  Spread them in 1/2 inch layers on paper, sprinkle with salt, and let stand in shade.  Ten days after the last petals are added to the others, add 1/4 oz. ground cloves and 1/4 oz. ground mace.  You may also add one drop of rose geranium or 1 oz. of cologne over the mixture.  Put in a jar and you will have a delightful rose fragrance.

Good Morning Everyone,

With Spring here and flowers starting to bloom, Anna thought you might be interested in a few things you could make with your flowers and herbs. Some of these would be nice gifts, too.

The sun is shinning and it's a beautiful day today.

Hi Evie,

I will see that Anna gets your message.

I check SPAM before I delete it to make sure you or anyone else that is in SPAM and shouldn't be is put over here.

It's nice right now, hope it stays this way for a while.

These sound lovely. Thank you for these recipes Anna.

Now to try and keep the deer from eating my roses. I only have one rose bush, and last year it was in full bloom and beautiful one day, and the next day completely bare. The deer ate every flower during the night. This year my son bought me another rose bush, so I have two to protect.

How do the Amish and Old Order Mennonites keep the animals and bugs from eating their vegetables and flowers?

Thanks for the info, Anna! Thank you also Jean for the report on PennYan. I'm a bit familiar with the area-what a mess! I'm sure a lot more work will be needed to clean up, restore/rebuild. Blessings to all!
Hi Marilyn, beautiful here, too. Looks like we're in for showers+possible T-storms over the next couple days though. Take care! In Christ, Carol

Hi Doreen,

I will see that Anna gets your message.

I know the Amish use something to keep deer away, but I don't know what it is. Maybe I can get Anna to do a post on it.

Also, heard about the rain coming. I am going to enjoy the sun as long as I can.

You take care in Christ, too,
Marilyn

Hi Carol,

I will see that Anna and Jean get your messages. Was wondering if because of the damage, if they will cancel the Haiti Auction this year or at least change the date.

I heard that we are going to get thunder storms again. Going to enjoy the sun while I can.

Blessings to you and yours,
Marilyn

thanks so much for sharing these, they sound just wonderful! since you mentioned keeping the deer away, I was wondering if there is something they use to keep rabbits away? also if there is a good weed killer for the fence lines, that would not be toxic to our dog, she sometimes chases the rabbits into the hedges and I would not want her to get into anything toxic, we do have poison ivy and oak, that I want to eradicate. thanks so much for all the sharing, you have a wonderful blog, and it is very interesting!
